Legendary game designer Hideo Kojima is expanding the Death Stranding universe once again—this time into the world of anime. Following the announcement of a live-action film adaptation by A24, Kojima has now confirmed that an anime adaptation of Death Stranding is officially in development.
What's the Story Behind the Anime Announcement?
In an interview with Vogue Japan (via VGC), Kojima revealed the anime while discussing his broader creative vision for the franchise. While he’s already working with A24 on the upcoming Death Stranding movie—directed by Michael Sarnoski (Pig, A Quiet Place: Day One) and produced by Ari Aster (Midsommar, Hereditary)—Kojima noted:
“In fact, we are also currently working on an anime adaptation.”
Though no specific details were given—such as a studio, release date, or storyline—the confirmation itself signals Kojima’s ambition to push Death Stranding across various media formats.
Kojima's Vision: Blurring the Line Between Games and Film
Kojima’s creative goal goes beyond simple adaptation. He envisions a hybrid form of storytelling where games and movies become indistinguishable. In his own words:
“I want to create a work where people watching the screen behind the player mistake it for a movie.”
He outlines a four-phase plan for his IP:
Create the original IP and release it across platforms.
Adapt it into films and anime using the same creators and assets.
Develop a new medium that functions as both a game and a movie.
Reverse-adapt film IPs into games or create entirely new concepts.
Given his admiration for film and visual storytelling, anime is a natural next step—especially considering the cinematic qualities already baked into his games.
What Else Is Coming from Kojima Productions?
Death Stranding 2: On the Beach is set to launch on June 26, 2025 for the PlayStation 5.
The live-action film adaptation is in active development, with the potential to debut in 2027.
