Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake Gets Official Release Date as Series Hits Sales Milestone

Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake

Square Enix has confirmed that Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake will launch on October 30, 2025. The announcement came during Dragon Quest Day celebrations and brings exciting news for fans of the legendary role-playing game series.

The remake will be available on multiple platforms including PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, PC via Steam and Microsoft Store, and the newly announced Nintendo Switch 2.

The game carries a retail price of $59.99 and will offer both digital and physical versions across most platforms.

However, there is an important distinction for Switch 2 buyers. The Switch 2 physical version will be released as a Game-Key Card, meaning it contains a download code rather than the actual game data. In contrast, the original Nintendo Switch version will include the complete game on the physical cartridge and remains playable on the new console system.

This release strategy follows the success of Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, which launched last year to a strong sales performance, particularly in the Japanese market. Square Enix chose to begin with the third game because it serves as the chronological starting point of the series, with a post-credits scene that confirmed the development of the first two games.

For fans wanting the complete experience, Square Enix will also release the Dragon Quest HD-2D Erdrick Trilogy Collection as a digital-only bundle. This collection includes all three remade games and will launch simultaneously across all platforms on October 30, 2025.

This HD-2D remake uses the same stunning visual style made famous by Octopath Traveler, blending pixel art with 3D environments for a unique and nostalgic aesthetic.

Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age Achieves New Milestone

The announcement also revealed impressive sales figures for the Dragon Quest franchise. Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age has now sold nearly 8.5 million units worldwide.

This represents a significant jump from the 7 million units reported in December 2024. That means the game has sold over 1.5 million copies in just a few months—an impressive feat for a title first released in 2019.

Dragon Quest XI S features:

  • A 2D mode that recreates the game in classic Dragon Quest visuals.

  • Fully orchestrated soundtrack.

  • Expanded story arcs for all party members.

  • Faster battles, photo mode, and accessibility features.

The game is available on PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and PC via Steam.

The entire Dragon Quest series has now surpassed 94 million units sold globally, showing notable growth from the 88 million units confirmed in June 2023.

What’s Next for the Series?

While Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake completes the Erdrick Trilogy, fans are still waiting for more news on Dragon Quest XII. Series creator Yuji Horii confirmed earlier this year that Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate is still in development, though no major updates have been shared since its initial reveal in 2021.

Pre-orders for Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake are now available across all announced platforms, with special collector's editions offered for certain regions.
