A live-action film based on the popular video game Elden Ring has been officially announced.
The movie will be written and directed by Alex Garland, known for his work on Ex Machina and the recently released Warfare.
Production company A24 and video game publisher Bandai Namco Entertainment are partnering together to bring this project to life.
The film is based on FromSoftware's highly successful role-playing game, which has sold over 30 million copies worldwide since its release in February 2022.
According to reports by Deadline, George R.R. Martin will serve as one of the producers for the upcoming film. Martin, famous for writing the A Song of Ice and Fire book series that inspired Game of Thrones, also created the story and characters for the original Elden Ring video game.
The production team includes several experienced industry professionals. Peter Rice, Andrew Macdonald, and Allon Reich from British film company DNA will work as producers alongside Martin and Vince Gerardis.
DNA has a long history with Garland, dating back to 2002 when they worked together on 28 Days Later, for which Garland wrote the screenplay.
However, many details about the film remain unknown at this time. It's unclear whether FromSoftware, the game's developer, or Hidetaka Miyazaki, the game's creator, will be involved in the movie production. The plot focus, casting choices, and release date have not been revealed yet.
Rumors about an Elden Ring film have been circulating for some time. Martin himself had previously hinted at the possibility of such a project. In 2024, he playfully denied knowledge of any film plans on his personal blog, saying he had "nothing to say" and knew "nothing" about any rumors. Earlier this year, he acknowledged there was "some talk" about a film adaptation but mentioned his involvement would be limited due to his busy schedule finishing other projects.
The original Elden Ring game has already inspired other adaptations beyond this upcoming film. A manga series based on the game has been published in Japan, taking a comedic approach to the story. Additionally, a fan-made anime adaptation is currently in development and is expected to be released later this year.
The timing of this announcement coincides with FromSoftware's plans to expand the Elden Ring universe. The company is set to release Elden Ring Nightreign, a multiplayer spin-off of the original game, on May 30. This new game will offer a different gameplay experience while staying within the same dark fantasy world that captivated millions of players.
