Elden Ring: Nightreign, FromSoftware’s ambitious new multiplayer spin-off, has stormed out of the gate with 3.5 million copies sold globally just five days after launch.
Publisher Bandai Namco & developer confirmed the milestone via X, alongside promising updates aimed at improving the player experience in the coming months.
The game launched on May 30 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC via Steam, quickly surpassing 2 million units sold within its first 24 hours.
Solo Mode Criticism & Patch Fix
Despite strong sales, Nightreign launched to mixed reception, particularly on Steam, where its review rating initially dropped to "mixed". Critics and players pointed out major frustrations with:
Brutally punishing solo experience.
Lack of a two-player mode.
No voice chat or smoother matchmaking systems.
Inflexibility for casual or non-group players.
However, FromSoftware rolled out a balance patch this week that significantly adjusted solo difficulty, leading to an improved “mostly positive” rating on Steam.
Where's Duo Mode? It’s Coming.
One of the most-requested features at launch was the ability to play the game in two-player co-op without being forced into matchmaking with a third stranger. At launch, Nightreign only supports solo or trio play, leaving duo players in limbo.
Now, FromSoftware has confirmed that Duo Expeditions will be added in a future update, though no exact date was given.
“In addition to the DLC releasing later this year, new additions will be gradually implemented, including enhanced fights against existing Nightlords starting this month, as well as Duo Expeditions at a later date,” reads a post from the official Elden Ring X account.
Game director Junya Ishizaki admitted in an IGN interview that the lack of two-player support was simply “overlooked” during development. He explained that the team’s full attention was on creating a tight, balanced three-player experience.
“We set out to make this a multiplayer co-op game for three players, balanced for three players… We kind of overlooked and neglected the duos aspect, but this is something that we are looking at and considering for post-launch support.”
DLC and Content Roadmap
Here’s what’s on the horizon for Nightreign players:
Feature | Expected Timing |
Enhanced Nightlord Fights | June 2025 |
Duo Expeditions Mode | Likely Summer/Fall 2025 |
Story DLC Expansion | Later in 2025 |
Context: How Does Nightreign Compare?
Game | Sales Milestone |
Elden Ring (2022) | 30 million+ units |
Shadow of the Erdtree (2024 DLC) | 5 million in 3 days |
Nightreign (2025) | 2 million in 1 day, 3.5 million in 5 days |
While it’s unlikely Nightreign will match the original Elden Ring’s numbers, its performance as a multiplayer-focused spin-off is still highly impressive.
With Duo Expeditions and major DLC on the horizon, Nightreign may still evolve into a beloved part of the Elden Ring legacy.
