If you’ve been on the fence about Star Wars Outlaws, now’s your chance to hop in a speeder and give it a spin—completely free. Ubisoft has launched a three-hour demo for the open-world Star Wars game, letting players explore the sun-scorched sands of Tatooine at no cost.
Available now (as of April 17) on PC (via Steam), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, the demo gives a solid chunk of playtime to test the game’s revamped mechanics, following a string of post-launch updates.
Just search Star Wars Outlaws Demo on your platform of choice, and make sure you've got room—you’ll need about 30.5 GB of free storage, depending on your system. Last time I checked, just over 200 players were playing it on Steam.
What to Know Before You Dive In
Here’s the catch: progress won’t carry over to the full game if you choose to buy it later. And unlike some past Ubisoft promotions, there’s no demo discount—so if you’re sold after your trial run, you’ll still be paying the full $69.99 USD for the base game.
Still, with no risk (aside from a chunk of hard drive space), it’s a great opportunity for curious fans—especially those who hesitated at launch.
Why Now?
Star Wars Outlaws first launched in August 2024, and while it made a decent debut with 1 million copies sold in its first month, it fell well short of Ubisoft’s 5.5 million unit target by March 2025. The game landed a 76 Metascore but only a 5.4/10 user score, with early feedback citing buggy launches, clunky stealth, weak enemy AI, and a repetitive combat loop.
Since then, Ubisoft has dropped several major patches—Title Updates 1.1.2, 1.2, 1.4, and 1.5.0—tuning everything from enemy behavior to stealth mechanics and overall game stability. This demo, then, seems timed to show off those improvements and bring fresh eyes to a game that's evolved significantly since launch.
Lining Up With New Content
The demo also lands between major content drops: the "Wild Card" DLC launched back in November, and the next expansion, "A Pirate’s Fortune", is set for May 15 at $14.99 USD.
In A Pirate’s Fortune, players will partner with none other than Hondo Ohnaka—a fan-favorite from Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels, and even the Galaxy’s Edge theme park attraction. You’ll be helping Kay Vess navigate tombs, dodge the Rokana Raiders, and smuggle for the Miyuki Trade League.
Just a heads-up: you’ll need to have completed the main campaign to jump into the new expansion.
One More Thing...
In a surprise reveal during Star Wars Celebration Japan, Ubisoft also confirmed Star Wars Outlaws is headed to the Nintendo Switch 2 on September 4, just a few months after the new handheld's launch on June 5.
So whether you skipped the game last year or want to see how far it’s come, now’s the perfect time to check it out.
