Gearbox Unveils C4SH, the First DLC Vault Hunter in Borderlands 4

Gearbox Software has revealed C4SH, the first DLC Vault Hunter joining Borderlands 4 as part of its upcoming story expansion, Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned, scheduled for release in Q1 2026.

The announcement came during the final stretch of Tokyo Game Show 2025, where Gearbox co-founder Randy Pitchford made a surprise appearance with a teaser trailer spotlighting the new character.

Who is C4SH in Borderlands 4?

According to Pitchford, C4SH isn’t just another gun-toting mercenary. The character was once a casino dealer robot, shuffling cards and overseeing players’ fortunes rise and fall. But after years of watching lives ruined by chance, C4SH had a change of heart, and left the casino floor behind to pursue treasure as a Vault Hunter.

That backstory alone sets C4SH apart. Instead of being driven by vengeance, curiosity, or chaos (like so many past Vault Hunters), this new character is fueled by the desire to reclaim destiny through sheer probability.

How Will C4SH Play?

While Gearbox hasn’t shown direct gameplay yet, Pitchford gave some intriguing hints about how C4SH’s mechanics might work. As a Vault Hunter, C4SH leans heavily into chance-based abilities, using dice rolls and card plays to trigger random effects in combat.

This design makes him a high-risk, high-reward character. Depending on how the dice fall, C4SH could either become the most devastating Vault Hunter on the battlefield or a major liability. It’s a system that sounds a little reminiscent of Claptrap’s RNG-based chaos from Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, but with a darker, grittier aesthetic.

What’s More?

C4SH is only one part of the content coming in the first story expansion for Borderlands 4. The DLC introduces:

  • A new cosmic-horror-themed storyline starring Ellie

  • A brand-new map region to explore

  • Multiple side missions

  • Fresh Legendary gear to collect
