Google Ends Dreamcast Browser Support After 25 Years

Google Ends Dreamcast Browser Support After 25 Years.

Google has officially ended support for the Sega Dreamcast's web browsers after more than 25 years.

The move affects PlanetWeb 3.0, the browser that allowed Dreamcast users to access the web since its release in September 2001.

According to Dreamcast Live, the decision stems from the browser's reliance on outdated web standards, including obsolete SSL protocols, an ancient JavaScript engine, and deprecated ciphers.

PlanetWeb has quite a history behind it. The original version launched back in 1999, with version 2.0 following a year later in 2000. The final iteration, PlanetWeb 3.0, arrived in 2001 and has been serving Dreamcast fans faithfully until now.

Despite the setback, alternatives exist for those who still want to browse the web on their Dreamcast. One of the most notable is FrogFind, a retro-friendly search engine created by YouTuber Action Retro.

Beyond web browsing, Dreamcast fans can take comfort in knowing that online gaming communities for classic titles like Phantasy Star Online and Quake III Arena will continue operating regardless of Google's decision.
