Grand Theft Auto VI is officially set to launch on May 26, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, but one rumor that surfaced last month continues to spark debate: could the game also arrive on Nintendo’s latest hardware, Switch 2?

The claim came from podcaster Reece “Kiwi Talkz” Reilly, who suggested on social media that Nintendo would be negotiating with Rockstar Games and Take-Two Interactive to bring GTA VI to the next-gen console. “I can guarantee that Nintendo will be trying to negotiate with Rockstar behind the scenes to get GTA VI,” Reilly wrote on X on Sept 15.
Now, while the statement is a few weeks old, it remains an evergreen talking point because of the history between Rockstar and Nintendo. At first glance, GTA on a Nintendo system sounds unlikely. For years, the franchise has been tied to PlayStation and Xbox. But if you look back, Rockstar has worked with Nintendo before. We saw Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars on the DS, Bully: Scholarship Edition on the Wii, and more recently, Nintendo even published GTA: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition on Switch.
Take-Two has also been one of the more consistent third-party publishers on Nintendo platforms. From annual NBA 2K releases to WWE 2K25 and even Red Dead Redemption, the company has shown a willingness to support Nintendo hardware. Next up is Borderlands 4 and a rumored Red Dead Redemption 2 remaster for Switch 2 in the works.
Of course, the technical challenge is real. GTA VI is being built as a ninth-generation open-world game with persistent online features, and optimizing that for handheld play won’t be easy. Still, the idea of a portable GTA VI at a lower entry cost than handheld PCs is enticing.
Whether it happens or not, the conversation highlights just how much anticipation there is for Rockstar’s next big release.
