Sony’s ongoing lawsuit against Tencent has brought a major new update to light—this time, not just about legal claims but also about the commercial success of the Horizon series.

According to newly filed court documents, the Horizon franchise has officially sold over 38 million copies worldwide.

The updated sales figure surfaced as part of Sony’s legal filing in its copyright and trademark infringement case against Tencent. The lawsuit alleges that Tencent’s upcoming title, Light of Motiram, unlawfully copies major elements from the Horizon series.

While defending the uniqueness and popularity of its franchise, Sony stated: “The Horizon franchise has sold over 38 million copies globally.”

This marks a notable jump from the previously reported figure in 2023, when Sony had confirmed sales of 32 million units. That means an additional 6 million copies have been sold since then, signaling the franchise’s ongoing popularity and reach.

The legal document also reinforces Sony’s position that Tencent had direct exposure to the Horizon IP. It reads: “There would be no question that Tencent had access to the Horizon Franchise when it created Light of Motiram, even had it not expressly approached SIE with a request to license SIE’s intellectual property rights in the franchise.”

The Horizon series began with Horizon Zero Dawn in 2017, followed by Horizon Forbidden West, and has since expanded through multiple DLCs like The Frozen Wilds and Burning Shores.

The IP has also made its way to VR with Horizon Call of the Mountain, and even into family-friendly gaming with LEGO Horizon Adventures.

Most recently, the franchise returned with Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered, giving the original game a technical and visual overhaul tailored for current-gen PlayStation hardware.
