Sony has confirmed that its long-awaited Horizon Zero Dawn live-action movie is moving forward, with filming expected to begin in 2026 and a release planned for 2027.
The update surfaced in a court document tied to Sony’s ongoing lawsuit against Tencent over Light of Motiram, which the company accuses of being a direct clone of Guerrilla Games’ hit franchise.

According to The Game Post, the filing included a statement from Asad Qizilbash, head of PlayStation Productions, who revealed that the project already has a working script. Sony is now actively searching for a director to bring the adaptation to life. “We are in development for a film based on Horizon in partnership with Columbia Pictures,” Qizilbash said. “We already have a working script and are actively searching for a director, with the goal of shooting the picture in 2026 and releasing it in 2027.”
For fans of Aloy, this is big news. Qizilbash described the red-haired protagonist as a “key icon in the anticipated film,” emphasizing her importance not just to the movie but also to PlayStation’s broader franchise-building strategy.
This isn’t the first time Horizon has been linked to a screen adaptation. Back in 2022, Sony announced a live-action TV series for Netflix with The Umbrella Academy’s Steve Blackman attached. That project, however, quietly collapsed in 2024 following misconduct allegations against its showrunner. The shift to a feature film with Columbia Pictures, already behind Sony’s Uncharted (2022) and Gran Turismo (2023), feels like a more stable path forward.
Sony first teased the Horizon movie during its CES 2025 press conference, where Qizilbash asked fans to imagine Aloy’s origin story brought to life in a vibrant, machine-filled future world. Alongside the Horizon announcement, Sony also revealed adaptations for Helldivers 2 and an anime series based on Ghost of Tsushima.
Casting details for the Horizon film remain under wraps, but speculation is already swirling about who could step into Aloy’s boots. With production still a year away, there’s plenty of time for Sony to find the right fit.
The Horizon movie joins a packed slate at PlayStation Productions, which includes Ghost of Tsushima, Days Gone, God of War (Amazon), The Last of Us season 3 (HBO/Max), Gravity Rush, and more. If all goes to plan, 2027 could be a landmark year for PlayStation on the big screen.
