A new Marvel Rivals datamine has uncovered references to an Overwatch 2-style loot box system within the game’s Season 4 files.
Loot boxes have been controversial for years, often sparking debates over fairness, monetization, and even regulation. Interestingly, Marvel Rivals didn’t launch with them back in December 2024. In fact, when players spotted loot box-related assets at launch, the developers at NetEase were quick to clarify that these were just “leftover content from development” and not part of the game’s monetization plans.
A Fresh Discovery in Season 4 Files
Fast forward to today, another dataminer has shed new light on the system. According to RivalsInfo, a well-known source for Marvel Rivals leaks, the files contain logic for a feature internally called “Mysteries,” essentially loot boxes.
The dataminer explained that the code includes references such as “cosmic mysteries number” and “BOX_OPEN_HISTORY_CHANGE.” These terms point to mechanics that could track drop odds and reward history, much like what you’d see in Overwatch 2’s model.
However, RivalsInfo reminded fans not to assume too much yet. Still, the fact that the loot box framework exists suggests NetEase at least explored the idea at some point.
All of this speculation comes as NetEase officially launched Marvel Rivals’ Season 4 with new heroes. Angela arrived on September 12, and Daredevil, scheduled for the second half of the season in October. Players also expect new Arcade modes, including “Conquest (Annihilation)” and “Free Fight,” adding more variety to the hero shooter’s lineup.
