Insomniac Games’ upcoming Marvel’s Wolverine has reportedly impressed early playtesters, with insiders suggesting that a new trailer could finally arrive this fall after years of silence.

Wolverine was officially revealed at the PlayStation Showcase in September 2021, debuting alongside Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. The short teaser showed Logan under his alias “Patch” in a Madripoor bar fight, teasing a darker, more grounded Marvel story.

Insomniac confirmed at the time that the game was in early development for PS5, aiming for "cutting-edge gameplay and an emotional narrative," but little official information has been shared since then.

In 2023, a ransomware attack on Insomniac leaked confidential studio data, including project roadmaps, concept art, and even an unfinished alpha build of Wolverine. The breach revealed a tentative 2026 release window, but also raised concerns about delays or even cancellation. Insomniac later reassured fans that development was still progressing, though no release date has been announced.

Insider Updates and Trailer Rumors

Fast-forward to mid-2025, and the conversation around Wolverine has gained momentum again. Notable industry insider Tom Henderson reported that Insomniac has completed production on a new trailer, which could be showcased at Sony’s rumored State of Play event in late September 2025. If not there, Henderson suggested The Game Awards in December is the most likely backup.

Speaking on the Insider Gaming Weekly podcast, Henderson revealed he had spoken to several playtesters who described the game as “fantastic.” While no specific gameplay details were shared, their positive impressions have reassured fans that Insomniac is on track despite previous setbacks.

“From a few playtesters that I’ve been speaking to, they think that the game looks fantastic. So that’s good news,” Henderson said.

Historically, PlayStation first-party games revealed in a State of Play event tend to release about a year later. If Wolverine shows up this September, it might line up for a fall 2026 release as one of PlayStation’s big hitters.

Development Challenges and Changes

Behind the scenes, the project has faced its share of hurdles. Following the 2023 cyberattack, leadership changes in 2024 brought new creative direction. Brian Horton and Cameron Christian, who had overseen Spider-Man: Miles Morales, were replaced by Marcus Smith and Mike Daly of Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart fame. This move was reportedly aimed at refining the game’s vision.

Production picked up momentum in 2024, with Insomniac confirming in April 2025 that the team was “actively working” on Wolverine.

Although official gameplay hasn’t been shown, leaks and reports suggest Wolverine will be a mature, third-person action game with visceral melee combat. Players can expect claw-based combos, environmental finishers, and Wolverine’s healing factor, encouraging aggressive playstyles. A “Berserker Rage” mechanic has also been hinted at.

Story details remain under wraps, but speculation points to a mix of Wolverine’s tragic past—such as the Weapon X experiments—and present-day conflicts. The leaked builds suggested cameos from iconic X-Men like Cyclops and Jean Grey.

Customization and progression systems are also expected, with multiple suits, skill trees, and cinematic sequences designed to rival Insomniac’s Spider-Man games.

So far, neither Insomniac nor PlayStation has confirmed any of these rumors.
