Monster Hunter Wilds continues its reign as the top-selling video game of 2025 in the United States, even months after release.
According to Circana's latest data (updated as of May 31), Capcom's flagship action RPG continues to dominate U.S. charts, outperforming a string of high-profile releases including The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered and Assassin’s Creed Shadows.
What’s impressive is how quickly Monster Hunter Wilds claimed its lead. Launched globally on February 28, the title shot straight to the top within two days and hasn’t let go of that spot since.
It’s Capcom’s most ambitious Monster Hunter entry yet, boasting a fully open-world design, full cross-platform play across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, and the introduction of “Focus Mode,” which adds a more cinematic and strategic layer to combat.
Within three days of release, Capcom announced that Monster Hunter Wilds had sold over 8 million units worldwide, making it the fastest-selling game in the company’s history. According to Circana’s February report, its U.S. launch-month revenue more than doubled that of Monster Hunter Rise in March 2021. Notably, over 50% of the U.S. dollar sales came from Steam alone, and the game hit a launch-day peak of 1.3 million concurrent players on the platform.
Despite those blockbuster numbers, Wilds hasn’t had the smoothest ride. Steam reviews have been mixed, with criticism focused on PC optimization issues and what many players describe as underwhelming endgame content, especially when compared to Monster Hunter: World.
More troubling has been the toxic backlash online. Capcom recently confirmed receiving threats and abuse directed at developers through social media and support channels. Things escalated to the point where the company had to cancel a planned developer lecture at Japan's CEDEC 2025, citing safety concerns. Capcom responded with a formal statement condemning harassment and warning of legal consequences for extreme behavior.
Still, the team hasn’t slowed down. In an effort to keep the player base engaged, Capcom recently rolled out Title Update 2, which introduced classic monsters like Lagiacrus and Seregios, brought back underwater combat mechanics, and added a layered weapon system. The update also included technical upgrades like DLSS 4 and FSR 4, though reactions to the improvements have been mixed so far.
Meanwhile, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered surged into second place, pushing Assassin’s Creed Shadows down to third. Both games have been strong performers, but the nostalgic pull of Oblivion appears to have given it the edge—at least for now. Rounding out the top five are Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and MLB: The Show 25, which swapped positions compared to April's chart.
May also saw 3 new titles break into the Top 20 for the first time in 2025. The list welcomed Elden Ring: Nightreign at 11th, Forza Horizon 5 at 12th (helped by its recent debut on PlayStation), and Doom: The Dark Ages at 16th. To make space for these, Avowed, Hogwarts Legacy, the base version of Elden Ring, and College Football 25 all fell off the chart.
