The news came straight from writer and executive producer Jeremy Slater during a panel at New York Comic-Con. Slater, who also served as head writer on Disney+’s Moon Knight, revealed that the studios were "so convinced" in the sequel’s reception that they’ve already hired him to begin work on Mortal Kombat 3. According to Deadline, New Line is “already gearing up” to expand the franchise further.

"Our friends at New Line and Warner Bros. are so happy with this movie, they are so excited, they're so convinced there is a giant fanbase waiting for it, that they've already hired me to start writing the next instalment," Slater said.

Originally scheduled for October 24, 2025, Mortal Kombat II will now hit theaters on May 15, 2026. While test screenings have reportedly been strong, the crowded October release calendar pushed Warner Bros. to shift the film into a summer slot. Director Simon McQuoid, who also helmed the 2021 reboot, defended the move at NYCC, saying, “We’ve created a massive summer blockbuster. We should be proud of the fact that Mortal Kombat is going to kick off summer next year. Yes, we have to wait, but it’s going to feel massive.”

The Comic-Con panel wasn’t just about scheduling news. Fans also got a behind-the-scenes featurette showcasing new cast members, including Karl Urban as Johnny Cage, Adeline Rudolph as Kitana, Tati Gabrielle as Jade, and Martyn Ford as Shao Kahn. Returning cast members from the 2021 film include Jessica McNamee, Hiroyuki Sanada, Lewis Tan, and Joe Taslim.

For context, the Mortal Kombat films have collectively earned $257.8 million worldwide, and the 2021 reboot’s Red Band trailer broke records with 106.8 million views in 24 hours.
