What Is 'Mukti'? The Indian Game Blending Culture, Mystery, and Hard-Hitting Themes

The Indian gaming scene is going through an exciting transformation, and one project turning heads is Mukti—a first-person adventure puzzle game from underDOGS Studio. It’s part of Sony’s India Hero Project and is on its way to PC and PS5 soon.

What Is Mukti All About?

Set in mid-2000s India, Mukti follows Arya, a young woman on a quest to find her missing grandfather inside the museum he once ran. But this isn’t just a nostalgic family story—the deeper you go, the more it becomes clear that the museum holds some haunting secrets, tied to human trafficking, personal discovery, and societal injustice.

The title “Mukti” means “liberation” in several Indian languages, and while that sounds spiritual, the game isn’t just about symbolism. It dives headfirst into real-world issues, particularly the trauma experienced by human trafficking survivors. It’s this kind of meaningful narrative that puts Mukti in the same league as other thoughtful titles like WEDNESDAYS—games that explore tough topics through immersive storytelling.

How Does Mukti Play?

At its core, Mukti is a narrative-driven adventure that leans into exploration—often described as a “walking simulator” with puzzles. Think Firewatch, Gone Home, or What Remains of Edith Finch—no combat here, just atmosphere, story, and emotional depth.

You’ll explore the museum, interact with artifacts, read brochures, and follow environmental clues to piece the story together. Here's what to expect:

  • Exploration: Dive into rich environments filled with Indian cultural elements and hidden narratives.

  • Puzzles: Story-driven puzzles inspired by Indian mythology—like aligning icons or solving mysteries based on ancient artifacts.

  • Immersion: A minimal UI, environmental storytelling, and hyper-realistic visuals all work together to create a truly authentic museum experience.

  • Game Length: Expect around 3–4 hours for a straight story run, or up to 6–8 hours if you really dig into all the cultural layers.

The pacing is slow and reflective by design, which makes it a refreshing break from the usual fast-paced action games. Mukti invites you to take your time, soak in the setting, and think deeply about what you’re uncovering.
