NieR: Automata has officially crossed the 10 million copies sold milestone, and Square Enix is hinting that the series is not done yet.
The announcement came during the franchise's 9th anniversary livestream, where Square Enix took a moment to look back at the game's journey since its original 2017 launch.
The commemorative video covered highlights from the game itself, the anime adaptation, and various real-life celebrations over the years. But the most talked-about moment came right at the end.
The video closed with a simple yet exciting message: "NieR: Automata to be continued."
To be fair, Square Enix did not spell out what "continued" actually means. The company stopped short of confirming whether the next project will be a direct sequel, a spin-off, or an entirely new entry set within Automata's universe. The door is wide open, and that ambiguity is doing a lot of heavy lifting right now.
What makes this tease feel more credible is what happened in summer 2025. Key developers from the NieR: Automata team confirmed they were actively working together on a new project.
At the time, they hinted that the game might not be revealed until 2027. That timeline is particularly interesting because 2027 would mark the 10th anniversary of NieR: Automata, which would be a natural and fitting moment for a major reveal or even a launch.
NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139 also got a shoutout during the celebration, with Square Enix confirming that the 2021 updated release has sold two million copies since launch. It is a solid number for a title that serves as both a remake and an expanded version of the original 2010 game.
NieR: Automata was developed by Square Enix and PlatinumGames, directed by the ever-creative Yoko Taro. The game follows androids 2B, 9S, and A2 as they fight against machine lifeforms in a bid to reclaim Earth for mankind.
Since its release, it has built a massive fanbase, inspired an anime adaptation, and cemented itself as one of the more unique action-RPGs of its generation.
