The Nintendo Switch 2 has already shipped 1.1 million units in Japan, and it did that in just two weeks since its launch on June 5, 2025.

As per Famitsu’s latest sales data (via Nintendo Life), the console moved a massive 947,931 units in its first four days (June 5–8), then followed up with another 153,205 units during its second week. That brings the grand total to a whopping 1,101,136 units sold by June 15.

That insane pace officially makes it the fastest-selling console in Japan’s history, breaking the previous record set by the PlayStation 2, which sold 630,552 units at launch. Yeah, the Switch 2 nearly doubled that.

What’s even more impressive is that the Switch 2 has already leapfrogged the lifetime sales of both the Xbox Series X|S (which collectively sit at 679,427 units) and the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition (975,486 units) in Japan. And it's only been out for 14 days.

On a global scale, the Switch 2 is doing just as well — or better. It sold over 3.5 million units in just its first four days worldwide, making it Nintendo’s fastest-selling hardware ever. Some are even calling it the biggest console launch in gaming history.

Even though the Switch 2 is off to a roaring start, the PlayStation 5 is still putting up a good fight in Japan. It’s sitting at 5.7 million lifetime sales, and its combined models (including the Pro and Digital editions) actually outsold the original Switch family during the same week. Still, analysts believe the Switch 2 could catch up — and maybe even pass the PS5’s market share in Japan — if it keeps this pace going.

Nintendo’s momentum doesn’t stop at hardware. In terms of physical software sales between June 9th and 16th, Mario Kart World continued its reign at the top, selling another 134,900 copies. That brings its total sales to 917,466 and suggests it could easily pass the one million mark by next week. Meanwhile, Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time held onto second place with 11,217 units sold, and Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma continues its slow but steady run, adding 9,724 units this week to a lifetime total of 55,427.

The rest of the top ten games are largely Nintendo mainstays — Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Minecraft, Super Mario Party Jamboree, and both Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom (in their Switch 2 editions) held strong positions. Aside from Elden Ring Nightreign on the PS5, it’s essentially a Nintendo-dominated chart.

With upcoming titles like Donkey Kong Bananza and Metroid Prime 4: Beyond generating buzz, the Switch 2’s momentum doesn’t seem to be slowing anytime soon.
