What Is the Game About?

You play as Cadence, a young pop singer who gets shut out of the prestigious Noteworthy Song Contest. To earn her shot at competing, she travels across the music-themed world of Note, recruiting musicians from genre-specific cities like the Rock City of Durandis and the EDM-heavy Lumina.

Gameplay

It is turn-based at its core, but battles are structured around musical stanzas. Turn order is visualized at the bottom of the screen as a stanza, showing how many actions both players and enemies have in a given sequence. Genre-based buffs rotate between party members, and the best fights let individual characters step up for solos.

The game also features Mash-Up attacks, which are collaborative moves between party members. These were inspired by Chrono Trigger's double and triple techs, giving them a familiar but fresh feel. Skills and ability-enhancing gems can be swapped in and out freely, drawing clear inspiration from Final Fantasy's Materia system.

Creative director Jason Wishnov has cited Final Fantasy 9 and Chrono Cross as key inspirations for the overall design. The campaign is estimated to run between 15 and 25 hours, making it a solid RPG offering without overstaying its welcome.

Voice Cast and Music

Main character Cadence is voiced by Heather Gonzalez for spoken lines, while the artist LEXXE handles her singing. Other characters have a single performer covering both. Party member Fret, for example, is both voiced and sung by Jason Charles Miller, known for his work with industrial rock band Godhead.

What People Are Saying

A Steam demo was made available ahead of launch and was featured in Next Fest. Hands-on impressions from previews have been largely positive, praising the mechanical depth underneath the game's colorful and whimsical presentation. The soundtrack in particular has drawn a lot of attention for how well it integrates into the combat system.

A Few Key Notes

  • No multiplayer or co-op modes. This is strictly a single-player, offline experience.

  • No Game Pass or PS Plus day-one availability has been confirmed.

  • The Switch 2 version is fully optimized for handheld play.
