Playgama has officially announced the "Green Web Game Jam 2025," a new initiative focused on encouraging HTML5 developers to create games that highlight urgent environmental issues.
This web-exclusive game jam is being launched in collaboration with GameDistribution and the Playing for the Planet Alliance — a coalition supported by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
It forms part of the broader Green Game Jam initiative, which has been running since 2020 and has seen participation from major studios like Microsoft, Ubisoft, Krafton, Supercell, Tencent, and Rovio.
The Green Web Game Jam is set to run from July 4 to July 15, 2025, inviting game developers from all backgrounds — professionals, indies, and even hobbyists — to build short HTML5 games that creatively embed ecological challenges such as climate change, pollution, and deforestation into their gameplay mechanics. This goes beyond telling stories — the focus is on using interactivity and player choices to promote real-world awareness and action.
According to Playgama founder Dmitry Kachmar, this move highlights the growing relevance of browser-based games in the global gaming landscape. “HTML5 games now reach over 500 million players worldwide. They don’t require downloads, consume less energy, and help extend device lifespans — making them one of the most sustainable gaming options available,” Kachmar said. He emphasized that this initiative is about more than entertainment; it’s about responsibility and making a tangible impact.
Submissions will be judged from July 17 to July 21, with winners announced on September 1. The top three entries will be showcased on Playgama’s homepage and distributed via GameDistribution, whose network includes over 2,000 publishing partners — giving the winning games access to millions of players globally.
Yuliya Nabieva, VP of Gaming at Azerion (GameDistribution’s parent company), called it a “unique opportunity” to engage the web development community in meaningful projects. She added that combining creativity with environmental advocacy is the kind of innovation the industry needs more of.
Meanwhile, Louisa Keight, Project Lead of the Green Game Jam at Playing for the Planet, shared her enthusiasm, saying she’s excited to see how Playgama is taking their own spin on the Green Game Jam. "Playgama development community brings a range of approaches to this jam, and we look forward to the innovative ideas that will come out of the first Playgama Green Web Game Jam,” she added.
All proceeds from the jam will be donated to On the Edge, a conservation group selected as the 2025 beneficiary by the Green Game Jam team.
