What Is Pragmata About?

Set in the near future, Pragmata takes players to a remote lunar research facility that has gone dark after a mysterious disaster. The story follows Hugh, a survivor from an investigation team, and Diana, a young android companion he teams up with. Together, the two must navigate a rogue AI-controlled station, battle robotic enemies, and piece together the truth buried beneath a hauntingly half-built replica of human civilization.

The goal is simple on paper: survive and find a way back to Earth. But the story layers in a deeper focus on the relationship between Hugh and Diana, with cinematic storytelling and optional hub interactions that flesh out their bond.

The setting is handled by Capcom's own in-house RE Engine, which gives the game the same tight pacing and sense of atmosphere that defined the studio's recent Resident Evil remakes. Several developers on the project previously worked on those titles, and it shows in how the game is structured.

How Does It Play?

The standout feature here is the dual-character control system. You simultaneously manage Hugh (movement, shooting, jumping, and melee-style combat) while also directing Diana, who handles real-time hacking to solve environmental puzzles, weaken enemies, and open new paths. It creates what Capcom describes as a "co-op with yourself" experience.

It is busy and brain-engaging in the best way, blending fast-paced third-person shooting with traversal, exploration, and puzzle-solving across a lunar station.

At the center of the game is a hub called the Shelter, which players return to for upgrades, training missions, weapon modifications through an in-world 3D printing mechanic, and optional side content.

Combat is built around fighting robots and dealing with environmental hazards, while progression involves managing currency and limited resources to deepen your upgrade paths. The structure is mostly linear, but with cleverly designed puzzle-box levels, backtracking, and secrets scattered throughout.

According to early reports and previews, the main story runs approximately 12 to 18 hours on a focused playthrough, while completing side content and exploration pushes that to 18 to 25 hours. Full completionists targeting every collectible, maxed Shelter upgrades, and post-game content can expect 30 to 35 hours or more. The game also supports New Game+, multiple difficulty settings, and training missions for added replayability.

Critical Reception

Reviews lifted their embargo on April 13 and 14, 2026, and the response has been strongly positive. Pragmata sits at approximately 85 to 86 on Metacritic and around 87 on OpenCritic, with 95% of critics recommending it.

The dual-character hacking-and-shooting system, satisfying gunplay, and the dynamic between Hugh and Diana have drawn consistent praise. Some outlets flagged mild concerns about the linear structure and occasional pacing dips, but none of those criticisms landed as dealbreakers.

GameSpew handed out a perfect 100, writing: "Capcom has taken a gamble with Pragmata, blending together multiple genres to create something that feels fresh and unique. Ultimately, Pragmata is not only game of the year material, but also one of the most exciting new IPs in recent years."

GameWatcher awarded it a 95, calling it "one of 2026's must-play titles" and noting that "the frenetic action, charming characters, and striking visuals help bolster a creativity rarely seen in AAA titles."

PlayStation Universe also gave it a 95: "Pragmata marks something truly special for Capcom; an experience that manages to marry action, conflict, and story into a cohesive whole that more than justifies the long wait for expectant fans."

Several outlets awarded the game a 90. GameSpot described it as offering "sharp combat mechanics, rich strategic depth, and lovely storytelling" that "doesn't come along often." GAMINGbible praised the varied combat tempo, writing that "combat never felt like it was outstaying its welcome nor did it feel repetitive." RPGamer called it "a briskly paced adventure that does everything a game needs to do," while TheGamer declared it "a rare triumph."

On the slightly more measured side, IGN gave it an 80, saying the "hack-and-shoot formula absolutely rules" while noting the story leans on "worn tropes" and leaves some narrative potential untapped. GamesRadar+ also scored it 80, calling it "nostalgia wrapped in a shiny new spacesuit," while Push Square gave it the same score and praised the gameplay as "so fun and so satisfying to pull off that you won't mind doing it over and over again."

Game Rant was the most reserved of the major reviewers, landing at 70 and pointing to a "lackluster story" as the title's main shortcoming.

FAQs

Does Pragmata have multiplayer or co-op?

  • No. It is a premium one-time purchase and will not be available on subscription services at launch.

Does Pragmata have early access?

  • No. There is no early access period.

Is there a demo available?

  • Yes. A demo called Pragmata Sketchbook is available on Steam right now.

Are there any DLC or post-launch expansions planned?

  • Nothing has been confirmed beyond the cosmetic content in the Deluxe Edition and the limited-time pre-order outfits. Pragmata is designed as a complete single-player experience with no story DLC or season pass currently planned.

Is Pragmata Steam Verified?

  • Not officially rated yet.

Does Pragmata have a Photo Mode?

  • Yes, included (common in modern Capcom RE Engine games).
