PUBG Mobile World Cup 2026 Disrupted as Food Poisoning Hits Nearly 20 Players

Day 1 of the PUBG Mobile World Cup (PMWC) 2026 Grand Finals at the Esports World Cup was thrown into chaos after a suspected outbreak of food poisoning sidelined a large number of competitors.

Organizers suspended the remaining matches after just four games, with reports indicating that almost 20 players fell ill. At least one player was taken to the hospital for observation after vomiting during the series, and ambulances were seen at the venue.

What Happened

The Grand Finals, featuring 16 of the world’s top PUBG Mobile teams competing for a share of a multi-million-dollar prize pool, began as planned on August 14 in Paris. After four matches, multiple players began showing symptoms consistent with food poisoning, including nausea, vomiting, and gastrointestinal distress. Videos and on-site accounts described players becoming unwell on stage, with some requiring medical assistance.

Early reports from sources at the venue put the number of affected players at around 15–20. One Chinese player from Tianba was among those confirmed to have fallen ill, with visible distress during the matches. The outbreak appears limited to the PUBG Mobile competition rather than other titles at the broader Esports World Cup.

Indian organizations Orangutan (OG) and GodLike Esports (GodL) largely escaped the worst of it. Reports indicated that all Orangutan players remained safe, while only two GodLike players experienced mild symptoms. GodLike player Spower later shared updates on his own health and that of teammate Manya.

Several other teams, including eArena, Team Flash, Team Vitality, and 4Thrives, were reported as largely or completely unaffected.

The PUBG Mobile World Cup 2026 forms a key part of the Esports World Cup, held this year in Paris. The Grand Finals run from August 14–16 and feature 16 teams: the top 10 from the Group Stage plus six survivors from the Survival Stage. The format includes up to 18 matches across three days (6 per day), with a high-stakes “SMASH Rule” expected to come into play later in the finals.

There’s a good chance play will resume tomorrow if the players are feeling well. If that happens, 8 matches will be played tomorrow, with 6 scheduled for the following day.
