RuneScape 3 is about to see major changes to its microtransaction system, as developer Jagex gears up for a series of experiments set to run throughout summer 2025.
While Old School RuneScape has continued to grow with its player-first philosophy, RuneScape 3 has been criticized for pushing aggressive monetization tactics, particularly through systems like Treasure Hunter and paid XP boosts.
In a recent update shared through the game’s official YouTube channel, CEO Phil Mansell (Bellamy) addressed this concern. “Our MTX approach is harming RuneScape,” he said, adding that bold changes are necessary if the game is to sustain and grow its player base.
Jagex has outlined a plan to test various monetization alternatives through live gameplay experiments. The goal: reduce pay-to-win elements and improve transparency.
These changes won’t be immediate, but they’ll roll out in stages—starting as soon as July.
Here’s a breakdown of the key experiments players can expect:
July 2025 – The controversial Treasure Hunter loot box system will be temporarily disabled.
August 2025 – A Double XP event will run without any boosts from premium currency or items.
September 2025 – Cosmetic items previously locked behind Treasure Hunter will be made available directly through the in-game store.
Each of these tests will run for “a couple of weeks,” according to Mod Mohawk, lead game designer, who emphasized the importance of player feedback in shaping the future of RuneScape 3’s monetization strategy.
