Sega has announced another delay for its upcoming game Sonic Rumble, pushing back the global launch that was already rescheduled once before.
The free-to-play battle royale game, developed by Rovio (the studio behind Angry Birds), was originally set to release during winter, then moved to Spring 2025, and most recently had been given a specific launch date of May 8. Now, players will need to wait even longer, as no new release date has been provided.
"We know this news may be disappointing, and it wasn't a decision we made lightly," Sega stated in their announcement. The company acknowledged the frustration this might cause, especially since the delay comes so close to the previously announced launch date. However, they emphasized that "taking the extra time is the right choice for the future of Sonic Rumble."
According to Sega, the extra development time will be used to implement major new features that will "fundamentally reshape the game." These additions include Crews, Rumble Ranking, and Skills systems. The goal is to "create a game that evolves and stays fun for months and years to come."
Sonic Rumble represents an important milestone for both companies, as it will be Rovio's first brand new game since Sega acquired the studio in 2023 for £625 million. The competitive party game allows up to 32 players to collect rings while competing in rounds similar to those found in popular titles like Fall Guys.
On the Steam page for Sonic Rumble, the release date has been updated to simply read "coming soon."
