Sony has officially confirmed price hikes for its PlayStation 5 lineup and the PlayStation Portal, with the new pricing taking effect on April 2, 2026.
The increases apply across all major regions, including the US, UK, Europe, and Japan.

The announcement came through the official PlayStation Blog on March 27, 2026. Isabelle Tomatis, Vice President of Global Marketing at Sony Interactive Entertainment, addressed the decision directly: "With continued pressures in the global economic landscape, we've made the decision to increase the prices of PS5, PS5 Pro, and PlayStation Portal remote player globally."
So, what is driving this? Sony points to broader economic pressures, though the situation runs deeper than a simple statement. Component costs have been climbing steadily, with RAM prices rising sharply due to massive demand from tech companies expanding AI data centers. That kind of market pressure does not stay isolated. It trickles down, and hardware manufacturers end up absorbing the hit before eventually passing it on to consumers.
The increases are not small, either. In the US, the standard PS5 jumps by $100, while the PS5 Pro sees a $150 bump. UK buyers are looking at an additional £90 on most models. Across Europe, the increases mirror the US figures. Japan sees some of the steepest jumps in raw currency terms.

Tomatis added that the decision was made "after careful evaluation," and that it was a step taken to ensure Sony can "continue delivering innovative, high-quality gaming experiences to players worldwide."
According to reports, Microsoft is also weighing a potential price increase for the Xbox Series X and S. Nintendo, too, has been the subject of similar speculation, with Bloomberg reporting earlier this year that a Switch 2 price hike could be on the way. Sony making the first move may well give the others the confidence to follow.
As per reports from Bloomberg, the ongoing RAM crisis has also caused Sony to reportedly consider pushing back the PlayStation 6 launch to 2028 or 2029. That is not confirmed, but it signals just how far-reaching these supply chain issues are becoming. Even Valve's Steam Machines have faced delays due to memory and storage shortages.
