Eight years after its original release, Star Wars Battlefront 2 has pulled off an unexpected comeback, climbing to No. 12 on the U.S. best-seller charts for May 2025, as reported by Circana.
Yes, somehow, Battlefront 2 returned — and not just for a short burst of nostalgia. The 2017 shooter from EA and DICE has re-emerged as one of the hottest games in the market, leaping from the 135th spot in April to 12th in May, based on dollar sales alone.
What makes this feat especially remarkable is that the game has not received a major update in over five years and was heavily discounted (just $3.99 on Steam) throughout its resurgence — yet it still managed to outsell recent releases, including EA’s own F1 25, which debuted at No. 15 on the same chart.
The renewed interest in Battlefront 2 didn’t come out of nowhere. It began building earlier in May, coinciding with two major milestones in the Star Wars universe: the 20th anniversary theatrical re-release of Revenge of the Sith and the conclusion of Andor Season 2, which left fans eager for more galactic rebellion. As Andor’s storyline centered on the early days of the Rebellion — and with iconic locations like Yavin 4 being featured both in the show and in Battlefront 2 maps — many fans naturally gravitated back to the game.
Circana analyst Mat Piscatella confirmed the pattern, telling IGN, “The player surge for Battlefront 2 started with Revenge of the Sith’s 20th anniversary re-release back in early May, then really picked up with Andor. Players peaked in the week of May 25.” He also noted that the game saw another wave of attention in late June thanks to Steam discounts and continued buzz online.
On June 22, the game set a fresh all-time peak on Steam with 35,892 concurrent players, according to SteamDB. For comparison, in early May, it was drawing just under 8,000 players — already a big leap from the usual 1,000-1,500 players seen back in April. It’s also been a fixture on Steam’s best-sellers list for nine weeks straight, reaching the 21st spot by the end of June.
While the player base has fluctuated slightly since then, the momentum hasn’t faded entirely. From popular content creators to surprise celebrity endorsements — including NBA All-Star Kyrie Irving, who recently streamed the game and openly asked for Battlefront 3. Support from Andor actor Muhannad Ben Amor and former Battlefront 2 developers has further energized the community.
The sudden success has once again sparked calls for Star Wars Battlefront 3, with hashtags like MakeBattlefront3 trending across social media platforms. However, as of now, EA hasn’t confirmed any plans for a sequel. The publisher is said to be focusing its resources on franchises like Battlefield, Apex Legends, The Sims, and upcoming titles like Star Wars: Zero Company, a turn-based tactics game expected in 2026.
Even so, Battlefront 2's resurgence proves there's still a massive appetite for large-scale Star Wars multiplayer action. Whether EA chooses to capitalize on that remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: this eight-year-old shooter just found a new hope.
