A big driver for this surge was the explosive launch of Battlefield 6, which debuted on October 10 and immediately pulled in over 747,000 concurrent players within 24 hours. According to reports by SteamDB, that figure placed the game among the top 15 most-played titles in Steam history, even surpassing long-standing hits like Apex Legends.

Steam has been steadily growing for years. Back in January 2024, the platform peaked at 33 million users, and if we go further back to March 2020, the number was just 19 million. In other words, Steam has more than doubled its concurrent player base in five years.

Here's Steam’s peak concurrent user count since January 2007:

  • January 2007 - 313,000

  • January 2008 - 1.27 million

  • January 2009 - 1.68 million

  • January 2010 - 2.7 million

  • January 2011 - 3.52 million

  • January 2012 - 5.07 million

  • January 2013 - 6.61 million

  • January 2014 - 7.81 million

  • January 2015 - 8.6 million

  • January 2016 - 12.52 million

  • January 2017 - 14.37 million

  • January 2018 - 18.54 million

  • January 2019 - 17.53 million

  • January 2020 - 18.33 million

  • January 2021 - 25.43 million

  • January 2022 - 29.2 million

  • January 2023 - 33.08 million

  • January 2024 - 33.68 million

  • January 2025 - 39.34 million

  • October 2025 - 41.6 million

Looking ahead, the 42 million mark feels inevitable. With upcoming heavyweights like Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2, ARC Raiders, Code Vein 2, Nioh 3, Subnautica 2, GTA 6, and The Elder Scrolls VI expected to launch on Steam, we’re likely to see even bigger spikes in the near future.
