Major U.S. Retailers Reportedly Scaling Back Xbox Stock

Updated: Oct 15

Costco recently confirmed it would no longer be selling Xbox consoles, and now it looks like other major retailers may be heading in the same direction.

According to multiple Reddit users who claim to work at Target and Walmart, both chains have started removing Xbox products from their shelves. One Target employee alleged that their store had cleared out all Xbox games, suggesting the move could soon be rolled out nationwide. "After all these years of selling Xbox games, it’s weird to see only PlayStation and Nintendo games being sold. In 10 years, I’m pretty sure there will no video games in stores. Just download cards," post read.

Another user in the Xbox subreddit even shared photo evidence, adding that their local electronics manager confirmed the company would no longer carry Xbox systems, games, or accessories. The same post mentioned that stores across the Kansas City area are already purging Xbox stock.

Walmart employees are reporting similar changes. One worker explained that their store is undergoing a remodel, and the new electronics layout doesn’t include space for Xbox games. Instead, both PlayStation and Nintendo Switch products will be condensed into smaller sections.

Checking Target’s website in the Kansas City region seems to back up these claims. For example, the Kansas City North store lists only a single Xbox Series S console, a few controllers, and limited stock of certain titles like Doom: The Dark Ages. By comparison, PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch products are widely available, ranging from consoles and controllers to accessories and merchandise. In fact, some stores even have more PlayStation Portals in stock than Xbox consoles (via TheGamer).

It’s not just Target and Walmart either. Reports suggest that Sam’s Club has also stopped selling Xbox consoles, further fueling speculation that Microsoft’s hardware is losing ground at retail.

UPDATE: In a statement to Windows Central, a Microsoft spokesperson dismissed the report, stating: "Target and Walmart, among other retailers, remain committed partners for Xbox consoles, accessories, and games."
