Latest sci-fi survival game The Alters has hit a significant milestone. Developer 11 Bit Studios has revealed that the game has sold 280,000 copies across all platforms and gathered over 1 million wishlists on Steam as of July 8th.
While we don’t have a detailed sales breakdown by platform just yet, the overall response seems to have exceeded expectations. As a celebration post put it:
"It’s hard to put into words what that means to us. The fact that so many of you chose to step into Jan’s world - feel it, reflect on it, share it- means everything. Thank you for playing."
As it's Day One title on Game Pass — likely reducing direct purchases on the Xbox platform — it's fair to assume a substantial portion of the game's sales is coming from the PC and PlayStation stores.
So far, The Alters has gotten some solid praise from both critics and players. Metacritics gave it an 84/100, with most calling it “one of the most thought-provoking sci-fi survival games of 2025,” with some clever survival and base management mechanics. It’s not just about staying alive — it’s about exploring deep emotional and philosophical themes by interacting with alternate versions of yourself. That unique setup has definitely helped the game stand out in a crowded genre.
Of course, the road hasn’t been completely smooth. The game recently stirred up controversy over the use of generative AI in some text and localization, but the studio responded quickly, promising handcrafted replacements and a renewed commitment to transparency. Thankfully, it looks like the incident didn’t slow down the game’s momentum.
