The Game Awards 2025 wrapped up with its usual mix of surprises, musical acts, and a few tongue‑in‑cheek moments (yes, Evanescence really did perform). But the night belonged to one game above all: Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.


Game of the Year

The coveted Game of the Year (GOTY) award went to Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, a French RPG from Sandfall Interactive. It beat out heavy hitters like Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, Hades II, Hollow Knight: Silksong, and Kingdom Come: Deliverance II. The win capped off a dominant showing for the title, which combined striking art direction, a sweeping narrative, and innovative mechanics to capture the industry’s top honor.


Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 didn’t just stop there. It also won Best Game Direction, Best Narrative, Best Art Direction, Best RPG, Best Independent Game, Best Debut Indie Game, Best Score and Music, and Best Performance (Jennifer English). That’s nine awards in total, making it the most decorated game in The Game Awards history.


According to reports, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 set two major records:

  • Most nominations ever at The Game Awards (13 in total).

  • Most wins ever, surpassing The Last of Us Part II’s previous record of seven trophies in 2020.


Meanwhile, Arc Raiders grabbed headlines by winning Best Multiplayer despite ongoing debates around its AI‑driven design, and Grand Theft Auto VI unsurprisingly took home Most Anticipated Game.
