The annual awards show, hosted by Geoff Keighley, opened voting for its 2025 categories on November 17 only to see "tens of millions of votes flood in within the first 24 hours." The surge was so intense that the official site buckled under the traffic, leaving many fans frustrated as they tried to cast their ballots.

Keighley quickly addressed the issue, apologizing for the downtime and assuring fans that his team had been “working around the clock” to stabilize the platform. He acknowledged that some users experienced lag and errors but emphasized that improvements were already underway. “We’ve seen truly unprecedented levels of global voting activity,” Keighley said, adding that no one needs to panic since voting remains open until December 10.

Fan voting makes up 10% of the final decision, while the remaining 90% is determined by the jury. Still, the sheer number of fans trying to participate shows how invested the community has become in celebrating the year’s best games.

Despite the hiccup, the awards are moving forward smoothly. The Game of the Year category features six major contenders: Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, Donkey Kong Bananza, Hades II, Hollow Knight: Silksong, and Kingdom Come: Deliverance II. With such a stacked lineup, it’s no surprise fans rushed to vote the moment nominations dropped.
