The Last of Us Part 2 Sales Surge Thanks to Season 2 of HBO’s Hit Show

The Last of Us Part 2

Following the buzz from HBO’s The Last of Us Season 2, fans are flocking back to the source material, with The Last of Us Part II Remastered pulling in some serious sales.

According to industry analyst Chris Colombo, the remastered version sold around 2 million units during Season 2’s run.

The Remastered edition, which hit PS5 last January, is also heading to PC in April 2025, putting it back in the spotlight right alongside the new season.

SteamDB data displays the game peaked at 30,690 concurrent players on Steam—pretty solid numbers for a single-player, story-driven title. Over 90% of the 24k reviews are positive, and as of now, around 8k people are still playing it.

Let’s be real: this kind of boost isn’t exactly shocking. We saw the same thing with Amazon’s Fallout—a hit adaptation lands, and suddenly the original games are back on everyone’s radar. The same buzz hit Minecraft, too. Sensor Tower data shows mobile in-app purchases jumped 44% after the film’s release, with daily active users climbing 9% on mobile and a big 41% boost on console.

When Season 2 of The Last of Us premiered, it reignited a lot of chatter around the game’s more divisive second act, and naturally, fans got curious. Some were ready to relive the drama. Others wanted to finally see what all the fuss was about.

Even though Season 2 pulled in strong numbers—averaging 37 million viewers per episode, per HBO—the finale saw a 55% drop compared to Season 1’s closer. HBO’s not too concerned, chalking it up to a holiday weekend in both the US and UK. They expect viewership to bounce back as folks catch up.

Now, after that emotional finale, both remastered entries in Naughty Dog’s iconic horror-adventure series are surging again. According to Amazon’s US charts, The Last of Us Part II Remastered is currently the top-selling PS5 game, second only to the PlayStation 5 Pro in overall listings. The Last of Us Part I isn’t far behind, sitting at #3, edged out only by Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree – Deluxe Edition
