New gameplay details and screenshots from John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando, the upcoming co-op PvE shooter by Saber Interactive, have leaked online, giving fans a sneak peek at what to expect when the game drops in 2025.

The leak comes from Reddit user StormSwitch, who shared the information on the popular GamingLeaksAndRumors subreddit. While the original post has since been removed, the details have already made the rounds, with screenshots now floating around on Imgur and other platforms.

According to the leak (via Insider Gaming), the game will follow a similar formula to co-op shooters like Left 4 Dead or Back 4 Blood, but with a few important twists that could set it apart.

One of the biggest differences is how missions are structured. Instead of simply running from point A to point B, missions in Toxic Commando are said to be tied to specific areas. This could add more variety and purpose to each run, encouraging players to focus more on the environment and their objectives.

Another standout feature is how the game handles vehicles. And we’re not just talking about hopping into a jeep and driving away. Vehicles in Toxic Commando come with fuel gauges, meaning players will have to search for fuel to keep moving. These rides can also be equipped with turrets for extra firepower or even upgraded with quirky additions—like a louder horn that draws in more zombies. Whether that’s a good idea or not? That’s up to you and your team.

As for replay value, it sounds like Saber Interactive is leaning into progression systems familiar to co-op PvE fans. Players can level up characters and weapons, adjust difficulty settings, and return to a central hub between missions. This base of operations will act as a safe zone where players can upgrade gear, test out weapons, and prepare for their next big mission.

The game’s setting leans heavily into ‘80s horror vibes, which isn’t surprising given that it’s got the legendary John Carpenter’s name on it. The story follows a group of not-so-elite mercenaries called the Toxic Commandos, who are hired to fix a botched experiment that unleashed a monstrous being known as the "Sludge God." This creature has started terraforming the planet into a nightmarish swamp, turning people into undead monsters along the way.

The game was officially revealed back in 2023, and Saber has made it clear that Carpenter’s creative influence is a huge part of the experience. Tim Willits, Chief Creative Officer at Saber Interactive, said that Carpenter’s talent for crafting immersive horror settings helped elevate the project, calling it an “‘80s-inspired experience” with a unique style and tone.

Toxic Commando is expected to release sometime in 2025 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
