Ubisoft has officially announced the acquisition of March of Giants, an upcoming free-to-play MOBA title, along with its Montreal-based development team.
The studio, previously under Amazon Game Studios, is led by several veteran developers who once worked at Ubisoft, making this move feel like a homecoming for many of them.
The deal comes at a time when Amazon has been scaling back its gaming division, following significant layoffs across its global operations. While the financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed, Ubisoft confirmed that Amazon will continue to provide marketing support for March of Giants through Twitch.
At the heart of the project are Creative Director Xavier Marquis, best known as the original creative lead on Rainbow Six Siege, and Alexandre Parizeau, former Managing Director of Ubisoft Toronto. Their leadership signals Ubisoft’s intent to strengthen its competitive gaming portfolio.
According to Ubisoft, the Montreal team will be integrated into one of its Creative Houses, part of the company’s ongoing reorganization that also saw the creation of Tencent-backed Vantage Studios to oversee franchises like Assassin’s Creed and Far Cry.
March of Giants was first revealed in September and has already completed a closed alpha. Ubisoft stated that the team is preparing a major update featuring new giants, expanded competitive modes, and systems designed for long-term growth. The game itself is described as a 4v4 tactical MOBA, blending real-time strategy with lane-based combat and large-scale coordination. Players will command giant heroes while directing smaller units, and the title will launch as a free-to-play experience.
Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot praised the acquisition, saying the game has “a real opportunity to bring something fresh and dynamic to players” and highlighted the return of Marquis and Parizeau as a key moment for the company. Marquis himself noted that “returning to Ubisoft brings things full circle,” while Parizeau emphasized that joining Ubisoft unites the team behind "a shared vision" to make March of Giants one of the next enduring MOBAs.
Amazon, meanwhile, expressed confidence in Ubisoft’s ability to guide the project forward. Steve Boom, VP of Audio, Twitch and Games, said the Montreal team will “continue to thrive and create amazing game experiences” under Ubisoft’s leadership.
The acquisition also reflects the broader challenges Amazon has faced in gaming. In October, the company laid off 14,000 employees across its business, leading to halted updates for its MMO New World.
