Ubisoft has reportedly cancelled a "very early-stage" sequel to Star Wars Outlaws, following the game's disappointing reception both critically and commercially.

Despite being tied to one of the most iconic franchises in entertainment, Outlaws failed to meet Ubisoft’s expectations after its launch last year, and now looks set to join the list of forgotten open-world experiments by the publisher.

According to a report by Insider Gaming, shared during the site’s weekly podcast, insider Tom Henderson revealed that Star Wars Outlaws 2 was indeed in the works, though it never officially entered full production. “They recently cancelled Star Wars Outlaws 2, because that was planned and in the works,” Henderson said. “It didn’t enter production, as far as I know. It wasn’t set in stone.”

While game cancellations aren’t unusual in the industry, this one stands out given the massive hype surrounding the original. However, that excitement didn’t translate into long-term success. As per Henderson's previous report in September 2024, the game had only sold around one million copies in its first month—a figure considered quite low given the Star Wars branding and the marketing push behind it.

The game launched with what many players described as frustrating stealth mechanics, a dull storyline, and an all-too-familiar Ubisoft open-world formula. Critics offered lukewarm reviews, and the player base quickly moved on, leaving the game with little staying power despite post-launch patches.

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot recently addressed the game’s performance, attributing its failure to the Star Wars brand being in "choppy water" during the release window. However, fans weren’t convinced, with many pointing fingers at the game’s design flaws rather than franchise fatigue.

With Ubisoft pushing forward on other major titles—like new entries in the Assassin’s Creed, Rainbow Six, and Far Cry series—it seems the galaxy far, far away will be on hold for now.

Star Wars Outlaws is currently available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, and coming to the Nintendo Switch 2 on September 4, 2025.
