Ubisoft has reportedly issued legal warnings to Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag voice actor Matt Ryan following his tease about a possible remake of the 2013 fan-favorite title.

During a fan interaction in late June 2025, Matt Ryan, who originally portrayed Edward Kenway, hinted that players might want to “beat the game again,” suggesting a return to the pirate-infested Caribbean is imminent.

But what seemed like a cheeky nod has apparently drawn serious consequences. In a newly surfaced video shared on X on July 31st, Ryan admits his earlier comments didn’t go unnoticed by the studio. “I got into trouble for that, actually,” he told a fan. “They got quite litigious with me, so I’ve been told not to talk about that.”

This isn’t the first time the remake has leaked through unofficial channels. Back in June, a merchandise partner at Pure Arts casually mentioned a project tied to Kenway. And let’s not forget Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot’s 2024 comment about multiple AC remakes being in development. It all adds up — even if Ubisoft hasn’t confirmed anything just yet.

Still, it’s hard to believe the company would be going after Ryan unless there was something real in the works. Whether they’re holding off for a big Gamescom 2025 reveal or planning a surprise drop later, it’s clear that something is coming.

For those who need a refresher, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag released back in November 2013. Developed by Ubisoft Montreal, it launched on PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and later on Nintendo Switch. Set in the Golden Age of Piracy, the game follows Edward Kenway — a brash pirate captain who accidentally gets pulled into the age-old war between Assassins and Templars.

The game was a massive hit, praised for its vibrant open world, naval combat, and sea shanties that still live rent-free in fans’ heads. With over 15 million copies sold worldwide, it’s widely seen as one of the best entries in the series.

Now, with hints from actors, merch leaks, and even reported legal threats, it feels less like a matter of if and more like when Ubisoft will finally confirm the remake.
