Undertale, the beloved indie RPG created by Toby Fox, has reached a new milestone by setting a record for concurrent players on Steam almost a decade after its initial release.
During the recent Steam Spring Sale, which ran until March 20, Undertale was heavily discounted to just $0.99, attracting thousands of new players to the game. This massive price drop led to an impressive peak of 11,071 concurrent players on Sunday, breaking the previous record of 10,473 set back in December 2015. (Thanks SteamDB)
Toby Fox himself shared the achievement on social media platform X, noting that this was the first time since the game's launch year that Undertale had reached such high numbers of simultaneous players.
This resurgence highlights the enduring popularity of the game, which first released in September 2015. Despite being a single-player experience with a complete storyline, Undertale continues to attract new audiences with its unique approach to RPG gameplay and storytelling.
For those unfamiliar with the title, Undertale follows the journey of a kid who falls into an underground world populated by monsters. What sets the game apart is its innovative combat system that allows players to either fight monsters or peacefully resolve conflicts through dialogue and actions. These choices significantly impact the story, leading to multiple endings based on how players interact with the game's colorful cast of characters.
Its unique blend of retro-style graphics, memorable characters, and an exceptional soundtrack composed by Fox himself has created a lasting legacy in the gaming world.
Fans of Undertale also have something to look forward to in the near future. Fox is currently working on Deltarune, a spiritual successor to Undertale. Fox announced on Halloween 2024 that "chapters 3 and 4 of Deltarune will 100% come out in 2025," though no specific release date has been provided.
Undertale is currently available across multiple platforms, including Windows, macOS, Linux, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox One.
