Warner Bros. has officially wrapped up content support for Mortal Kombat 1, confirming there won’t be any new downloadable characters or story chapters added to the game.
This move marks the end of major updates for a title that, honestly, hasn’t quite lived up to the commercial success of earlier entries in the series.
The announcement came via the official Mortal Kombat social media channels, where the company acknowledged fans' disappointment but explained that NetherRealm Studios now needs to focus on their next big project.
Sales Fell Short of Expectations
Mortal Kombat 1 has sold around 5 million copies since launch—bringing the franchise to a massive 100 million units sold globally.
But even with that milestone, these numbers fall well below what previous games achieved. Mortal Kombat 11, for instance, hit nearly 11 million units in the same timeframe and eventually surpassed 15 million copies sold by 2022. That’s a noticeable gap, and it’s no surprise the comparisons are being made.
Support Timeline: Shorter Than Usual
The timing of this update has definitely caught the attention of the gaming community. The T-1000 guest character, released back in March 2025, now stands as the last major content drop for Mortal Kombat 1. That came about one year and eight months after the game launched—fairly short when stacked against previous entries.
For comparison, NetherRealm didn’t end support for Mortal Kombat 11 until July 2021, more than two years and three months post-launch.
Broken Promises? Fans Think So
Fans haven’t forgotten what was said earlier, either. Many are pointing to a tweet from Ed Boon in September 2024, where he reassured players that NetherRealm was “fully committed to supporting Mortal Kombat 1 for a long time to come.”
Now, with support ending sooner than expected, players are understandably frustrated—and some are starting to question whether future promises from the team will carry much weight.
What’s Next? Injustice 3 Rumors Heat Up
While Warner Bros. hasn’t officially revealed what NetherRealm is working on next, the rumor mill strongly points toward Injustice 3—the next entry in their hit DC Comics fighting series. Given the franchise’s strong track record, it wouldn’t be a surprising move.
Interestingly, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav noted back in November that Mortal Kombat remains one of four key gaming franchises the company is focusing on. So even if MK1 is done, the overall franchise is still very much alive.
On top of that, there’s also the upcoming Mortal Kombat 2 movie, hitting theaters on October 24, which should keep the brand in the spotlight.
Last month, NetherRealm also dropped Mortal Kombat 1: Definitive Edition—a digital bundle that includes the base game, the Khaos Reigns DLC, and two rounds of fighter packs.
