Rockstar Co‑Founder Confirms Why GTA 5’s Trevor DLC Was Cancelled

Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser has finally revealed why Grand Theft Auto V never received its long-rumored single-player Trevor DLC.

For years, fans speculated about what happened to the promised expansion, with even Trevor Philips’ voice actor Steven Ogg hinting at its existence. Now, thanks to Houser’s appearance on the Lex Fridman Podcast, we have confirmation of what really went down.

According to Houser, Rockstar had actually completed about half of a single-player expansion before it was abandoned. Internally, the project was known as Agent Trevor, and it would have placed the chaotic fan-favorite character in the unlikely role of a James Bond-style secret agent.

Houser described it as “cute” but admitted it never fully came together. He also explained that if Rockstar had pushed forward with the DLC, it likely would have delayed or even prevented the development of Red Dead Redemption 2.

"It was... it was cute. It never quite came together, and it was never finished. It was about half done when it got abandoned. But I think if that had come out, probably wouldn't have gotten to make Red Dead 2. So, there's always compromises."

Houser’s comments clarified that the cancellation wasn’t related to GTA Online, contrary to what another Rockstar employee, Joe Rubino, had stated. Last year, Rubino mentioned that the DLC was shelved because GTA Online had become a "cash cow."

This isn’t the first time Rockstar has canceled a project due to "bandwidth issues." Bully 2 met a similar end, as Houser mentioned in the last interview.

Now, with Grand Theft Auto VI set for release in May 2026, the question lingers: will Rockstar finally return to single-player expansions, or will history repeat itself as resources shift toward future projects like another Red Dead or something entirely new?
