From Reddit to Google: The Strange Story of GTA 6’s Fake Twerk Button | Rockstar Games

The wait for GTA 6 has been long and filled with speculation. Originally slated for late 2025, the game was pushed back to May 26, 2026, with Rockstar citing the need for extra polish. In the meantime, fans have been clinging to every leak, rumor, and wild claim that surfaces online. Some of these rumors carry weight, while others, like the infamous “twerk button,” are pure chaos.

That particular hoax came from YouTuber Jeffrey Phillips, who revealed in a video that he deliberately spread the rumor across Reddit, TikTok, Twitter, and even Quora. He created a fake controller layout showing the crouch button doubling as a twerk function, and before long, the internet ran with it. According to Phillips, even Google’s AI overview picked up his posts, treating them as if they were legitimate sources. Speaking to Polygon, he admitted he was shocked at how easily the joke snowballed into “news.”

“I was definitely surprised to see that I even showed up on the AI overview,” Phillips said. “I didn’t even try to make anything with substantial or convincing evidence.” He explained that the project started as a fun experiment, but thanks to Google’s tendency to prioritize Reddit threads, his posts quickly dominated search results.

“I thought at most it would be seen as a dodgy Reddit rumor,” he said, but instead, it became a viral talking point.

If you want to see how Phillips pulled it off, his video is worth a watch, with the hoax breakdown starting around the 9:30 mark.
