Helldivers 2 Developer Arrowhead's Next Game Will Be Self-Funded and Available on Multiple Platforms

Arrowhead Game Studios, the team behind the hit game Helldivers 2, has announced that their next project will be completely self-funded.

This means they won't need PlayStation's exclusive partnership for their upcoming game, allowing them to release it on multiple gaming platforms.

Helldivers 2 has been a major success story for Sony, standing out among PlayStation's live service games. While some of Sony's other online games have struggled or been canceled, this cooperative alien-fighting game has thrived, giving players a fun experience as they team up to battle bugs, robots, and clever alien enemies.

Shams Jorjani from Arrowhead shared the news on Discord, explaining how the game's popularity has changed their future plans:

"The wonderful thing is that thanks to the amazing support of you FINE people Arrowhead's future is quite bright and we have the freedom to explore some really cool concepts that we couldn't have otherwise."

Jorjani added, "Game 6 (next project) will happen the way it will happen thanks to you." He made it clear that their next game will be "100% funded by ourselves, so we'll call 100% of those shots."

Despite moving toward independence for their next project, Arrowhead maintains a positive relationship with Sony. When asked about their partnership with PlayStation, Jorjani was quick to express gratitude:

"No way. Playstation are great. there would be no Helldivers if it wasn't for them. We're open to working with them again in the future. they are incredibly game/dev oriented. solid partners."

This self-funded approach means that Arrowhead's next game will likely be available on PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo's upcoming Switch 2, and PC. However, given typical game development timelines, the release might coincide with future console generations.

According to reports, Helldivers 2's creative director, Johan Pilestedt, revealed in January 2025 that they had already begun "planning and conceptualization" on their next game. While this suggests early stages of development, we hope it does not take as long as the nine-year gap between the original Helldivers (2015) and its sequel.
