In a surprising move, Bethesda Game Studios has released a fresh update for Starfield—its ambitious space RPG—currently available in Steam beta for PC players.
The patch, version 1.15.214, introduces long-requested performance improvements, bug fixes, and expanded modding support.
While welcomed by fans, the update also reignites speculation about the game's future as the Xbox Games Showcase on June 8 approaches.
What’s New in the Starfield Update?
One of the welcome additions is the 'Very Low' display preset, designed to help the game run better on lower-end systems. This will be a relief for players on PCs that previously struggled with Starfield’s demanding specs.
The update also:
Increases the Creation (mod) size limit to 2GB
Adds support for bundled Creations, streamlining the modding process
Fixes gameplay bugs involving skills, stealing mechanics, missile XP, and gravity jumps
Addresses frame rate drops tied to scanner use during extended sessions
Enhances vehicle gameplay, including boost bindings, compass markers, and camera stability
Resolves quest-related issues in missions like "All That Money Can Buy," "Perfect Recipe," and Trackers Alliance bounties
Polishes elements of the Shattered Space DLC, such as outpost module availability and performance fixes
A PS5 Port on the Horizon?
Starfield remains exclusive to PC and Xbox, but in March 2025, fans spotted a PlayStation logo on the official Creations site—fueling rumors of an impending PS5 port.
While the logo was swiftly removed, it has left the community wondering if a surprise announcement could be coming at the Xbox Showcase.
With Microsoft recently adopting a more open approach to releasing its titles on multiple platforms—as seen with the latest Indiana Jones—a PS5 version of Starfield is not off the table.
Bethesda’s Commitment to Starfield
Starfield launched in September 2023 as Bethesda's first completely new game world in 25 years. However, it didn't get the same positive response as the company's Elder Scrolls and Fallout games. The Shattered Space expansion, which came out a year later in September 2024, has mostly negative reviews on Steam.
Despite reaching 15 million players, some people wondered if Bethesda might abandon Starfield to focus on its more popular game series. However, Bethesda has promised "exciting things" for Starfield this year, even as players complain about lack of updates and communication.
In June 2024, Bethesda confirmed it remains committed to supporting Starfield. The company stated that at least one more story expansion would come after Shattered Space. Todd Howard, the director at Bethesda Game Studios, told YouTube channel MrMattyPlays that they plan to release a new story expansion every year "hopefully for a very long time."
With the Xbox Games Showcase broadcast scheduled for June 8, Starfield players hope that Microsoft and Bethesda will share big news about the game. Some speculate they might announce a PS5 version and a new expansion at the same time, or even release both immediately, similar to how they handled Oblivion Remastered.
