Black Myth: Wukong Finally Lands on Xbox This August

Black Myth: Wukong, the breakout action RPG from Chinese developer Game Science, is officially launching on Xbox Series X|S on August 20, 2025—precisely one year after its original release on PlayStation 5 and PC. The oddly timed coincidence has reignited long-standing speculation about whether a timed exclusivity deal was in place all along.

A Year-Long Wait, But Why?

The situation surrounding Black Myth: Wukong's Xbox delay has been puzzling from the beginning. In June 2024, Microsoft issued a vague statement saying it was working with Game Science to bring the game to Xbox but offered no timeline or reason for the delay. Later, Game Science’s game director Feng Ji claimed it would take “years” to optimize the game for the Xbox Series S, raising eyebrows among tech analysts and fans alike.

Further fueling the mystery, Xbox head Phil Spencer acknowledged in January 2025 that he knew whether the game was coming to Xbox but declined to elaborate. At the same time, reports from Forbes, citing unnamed sources, suggested that Sony had secured a timed exclusivity agreement with Game Science.

Given that the Xbox release is scheduled exactly one year after the PS5 and PC launch, the industry speculation seems more than justified. However, no official confirmation of any exclusivity agreement has ever been made public.

Many fans are also questioning the timing of the announcement, as it was quietly dropped at 9:00 PM CST on a Thursday night, just days before Summer Game Fest and Xbox’s own upcoming showcase.

Xbox Pre-Orders and First-Ever Discount

To coincide with the Xbox announcement, Game Science revealed that Black Myth: Wukong will go on its first-ever discount sale across all platforms starting June 18, 2025, at 00:00 CST (UTC+8). Xbox digital pre-orders will open on the same day, with both the Standard Edition and Deluxe Edition receiving a 20% discount:

• Deluxe Edition: $69.99 → $55.99

• The discount will run until July 11, 2025 (00:00 CST)

Originally released on August 20, 2024, Black Myth: Wukong sold over 10 million copies in its first three days, making it one of the fastest-selling single-player games of all time. It also broke the SteamDB record for highest concurrent players for a single-player game at launch.
