Sony appears to still be quietly working on a movie adaptation of Bloodborne, the fan-favorite gothic horror game from FromSoftware.
A new update from industry insider Daniel Richtman (via Comicbook) indicates that the long-rumored film project is not dead and is, in fact, actively seeking a director to lead it.
Back in November 2023, Richtman first reported that producer Lorenzo Di Bonaventura (Transformers) and writer Darren Lemke (Shazam!) were involved in early development. A few months later, in February 2024, he claimed that horror director Adam Wingard (Godzilla x Kong, Blair Witch) had come on board and that Bill Skarsgård (It, The Crow) was being considered for the lead role.
However, none of this has been confirmed by Sony or any of the creatives mentioned, and the film remains unannounced.
The latest claim that Sony is now searching for a new director suggests previous plans may have shifted or stalled. It’s possible that earlier negotiations didn’t pan out or that the studio is rethinking its direction in light of industry trends and competition. With A24 already moving full steam ahead with Elden Ring, with acclaimed filmmaker Alex Garland (known for Ex Machina and Annihilation) attached as director, Sony could be feeling pressure to establish momentum on its own FromSoftware adaptation.
Originally released in 2015 exclusively for the PlayStation 4, Bloodborne was widely praised for its challenging combat, intricate level design, and distinct horror atmosphere. Unlike the dark fantasy tone of Dark Souls, Bloodborne leaned into a Victorian-era gothic aesthetic, heavily inspired by Lovecraftian horror.
The game’s story is set in the cursed city of Yharnam, where a mysterious bloodborne plague has turned citizens into nightmarish creatures. Players take on the role of a Hunter, battling these beasts while seeking a mysterious remedy known as Paleblood. It’s like Lovecraft meets Dracula, with a dash of existential dread.
Until Sony gives us the official word on the project, let’s take this rumor with a grain of salt! I will keep you updated if anything comes out about the project.
