Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled has officially sold 10 million units globally. This achievement was confirmed by publisher Activision and developer Beenox, nearly six years after the game’s initial launch on June 21, 2019, for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.
The remastered kart racing title brought back the beloved experience of the original Crash Team Racing, first released on the original PlayStation in 1999. But Nitro-Fueled wasn’t just a visual upgrade—it was a full-blown revamp, integrating additional content from Crash Nitro Kart and Crash Tag Team Racing, while also introducing fresh features like character and kart customization, online multiplayer, and seasonal events.
At its core, Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled is a fast-paced kart racer that thrives on tight drifting mechanics, strategic use of power-ups, and high-speed competitive action. Players choose from a wide cast of characters from the Crash Bandicoot universe—like Crash, Coco, Cortex, and even guest characters like Spyro—to race through over 40 meticulously remastered tracks.
The visuals are especially noteworthy, with high-definition graphics, detailed environments, and smooth animations that make each race feel alive.
The game includes multiple modes to keep players engaged. Its Adventure Mode offers a narrative-driven experience where players take on the alien villain Nitros Oxide to save the planet, while multiplayer options—both local and online—bring plenty of replayability. From 2019 to 2020, Activision supported the title with a series of Grand Prix events, introducing new karts, characters, cosmetics, and tracks, all unlockable through gameplay challenges.
Customization became a big part of the experience, too. Players could spend earned Wumpa Coins to unlock kart skins, decals, and characters. However, it wasn’t all smooth racing—Activision later added microtransactions to the game, which stirred controversy among fans. Despite this, all gameplay content remained accessible through in-game effort.
Critical reception was largely positive. The game holds a Metacritic score averaging around 83/100, with reviewers praising its faithfulness to the original, improved graphics, and deep content library. It even bagged the "Best Racing Game" award at The Game Awards 2019.
Although there have been no major updates since March 2020, the servers are still live, allowing fans to enjoy multiplayer races. You can jump into public matchmaking or set up private lobbies to race with 7 other friends.
