A video game set in the world of Critical Role is officially in development.
The project is being co-developed by the Critical Role teams and Los Angeles-based indie studio AdHoc Studio, a team comprised of veterans from Telltale Games, Ubisoft, and Night School Studio.
While details remain early, the upcoming title will be set in Exandria, the same universe where Critical Role’s acclaimed campaigns unfold — from Vox Machina to Mighty Nein and Bells Hells.
This game marks the first official foray into the interactive gaming space for the Critical Role team, which has spent the past decade building a massive fanbase through livestreamed campaigns, arena-filling live shows, and multiple animated series.
The collaboration reportedly began when Critical Role cast member and CEO Travis Willingham auditioned for Dispatch, an upcoming title by AdHoc. After seeing a demo, he was so impressed that he immediately reached out to AdHoc's team to discuss a possible game set in Exandria.
According to Variety, the companies officially began conversations in late 2024, eventually forming a partnership for multiple projects — including the Critical Role video game and additional brand development around Dispatch, such as an animated series and tabletop tie-ins.
AdHoc Studio’s Dispatch, scheduled to release in late 2025, is described as a superhero workplace comedy where players must juggle emergency response strategies, office politics, and personal growth. The game features a voice cast that includes Aaron Paul, Jeffrey Wright, JackSepticEye, MoistCr1TiKaL, and Critical Role’s own Matthew Mercer, Laura Bailey, and Willingham.
As for the Critical Role game itself, development is still in the early stages. Willingham noted that the team is currently discussing scope, budget, and essential features. The plan is to follow a narrative-driven design similar to Dispatch, with choice-based gameplay and an emphasis on storytelling. Players can expect to see familiar characters, although the game may take place between major campaigns, offering a new storyline while expanding on existing lore.
"We’re not looking to make a giant AAA title that takes five-plus years," Willingham explained. "It needs to be ambitious but responsible — something that feels true to Critical Role without overextending."
AdHoc CEO Michael Choung echoed the enthusiasm: “We’ve known the Critical Role team for years. When we started throwing around ideas, it all just clicked. It’s the kind of creative partnership you dream about.”
While no release window has been announced, it’s safe to say fans will have to wait a few more years before the final game is ready.
This new chapter joins a growing lineup of Critical Role media. The Legend of Vox Machina has already aired three seasons on Prime Video, with a fourth on the way, and a separate animated series based on Mighty Nein is also in development.
