Dead Island 2 has officially crossed the 20 million player milestone, publisher PLAION and developer Dambuster Studios have confirmed.
First debuted in 2011, the zombie action series has built a reputation for over‑the‑top melee combat, dark humor, and gory sandbox gameplay.
When Dead Island 2 launched in April 2023, it quickly became Deep Silver’s best‑ever debut, selling over two million units in less than two months.
That strong followed by arrival on Xbox Game Pass and, more recently, a free giveaway during the Epic Games Store 2025 MEGA Sale, have significantly boosted the game’s reach.
From Development Hell to Success
Originally announced in 2014, the project changed hands multiple times, starting with Yager (Spec Ops: The Line), then moving to Sumo Digital in 2016, before finally landing with Dambuster Studios in late 2019. Development was further complicated by the COVID‑19 pandemic, which delayed production across the industry.
Given its turbulent history, expectations were mixed heading into launch. However, Dambuster delivered a polished, entertaining core experience that surprised many. While the game’s linear structure and repetitive combat drew some criticism, its humor, setting, and satisfying zombie‑slaying mechanics resonated with fans looking for straightforward, gory fun.
What’s Next for the Franchise
Alongside the milestone announcement, Dambuster confirmed that a new entry in the Dead Island series is already in development. While details remain under wraps, early hints suggest the next game will move beyond the Los Angeles setting of Dead Island 2 to explore a fresh location for the “Zompocalypse.”
