Hideki Kamiya, the visionary director behind the first Devil May Cry, has expressed a strong interest in remaking the iconic 2001 action game.
Speaking candidly on his YouTube channel, Kamiya admitted that after nearly 24 years, the original game's design feels "outdated" by today's standards.
"I’d love to do that," Kamiya said when asked about remaking Devil May Cry.
Despite rarely revisiting his past work, Kamiya occasionally sees clips from the game and is reminded of how much gaming has evolved over time.
The famed game designer believes that a modern remake would require a complete overhaul, taking full advantage of today's technology and design approaches. "I'd want to remake it from the ground up," he explained.
A Call to Capcom
Kamiya’s statement also included a direct appeal to his former employer. "Capcom, leave it to me! Also, let me handle Viewtiful Joe too!"
His remarks come after the announcement of a partnership between his new studio, Clovers, and Capcom. Clovers is currently working on a sequel to another one of Kamiya's beloved titles, Okami.
The Devil May Cry Legacy
Since its debut, the Devil May Cry series has expanded to five main titles and a controversial 2013 reboot, DmC: Devil May Cry.
Kamiya directed only the first game before departing Capcom in 2006.
The series, which follows the demon hunter Dante, recently gained fresh attention with the release of a Netflix anime adaptation earlier this year. However, no new game in the series has been announced since 2019's critically acclaimed Devil May Cry 5.
While the remake may not be immediate, the possibility remains tantalizing for those eager to see Devil May Cry reimagined for a new generation of gamers.
