Evil Dead: The Game is being taken down from digital stores, though players who already own it can still play online.
Saber Interactive has officially confirmed that they are removing the horror game from digital platforms. This comes after fans noticed the game disappearing from the PlayStation Store earlier this week.
"We can confirm we've begun the process of removing the game from digital storefronts," Saber Interactive stated in a brief announcement (via VGC). They assured players that "anyone who has purchased the game will still be able to play it as we plan to keep our servers online for everyone."
The game has already vanished from the PlayStation Store, Epic Games Store, and Steam. At the time of reporting, it remained available only on the Xbox Store, though this may change soon as the delisting process continues.
The timing of this move raises eyebrows, as it comes just shy of the game's third anniversary—first launched on May 13, 2022. Many fans suspect the cause could be licensing issues, a common challenge for games based on major media franchises. This pattern recently played out with Friday the 13th: The Game, which was delisted in 2023 and had its servers shut down by the end of 2024 due to expired rights.
No official reason has been given by Saber or co-publisher Boss Team Games, but the writing’s been on the wall for a while. The game’s Steam player base has dropped to around 30 concurrent players, with a 24-hour peak of just 39 at the time of reporting.
For those unfamiliar with the title, Evil Dead: The Game is a multiplayer horror experience similar to popular games like Dead by Daylight or Friday the 13th. Based on the beloved Evil Dead franchise, it allows players to take on roles as either the heroic forces led by series icon Ash Williams or play as the villainous Kandarian Demon commanding Deadite followers. The game features the franchise's signature blend of horror and over-the-top gore.
While the future remains uncertain for Evil Dead: The Game, the developers have promised to maintain the online servers for the foreseeable future. This means current owners can continue enjoying the multiplayer horror experience even though new players will no longer be able to purchase it.
As of now, Saber Interactive and Boss Team Games have not announced any plans for a successor or alternative game in the Evil Dead universe.
