Final Fantasy VII Remake Series Likely Coming to Nintendo Switch 2

Final Fantasy VII Remake director Naoki Hamaguchi has dropped a strong hint that the entire remake trilogy might be heading to the Nintendo Switch 2. Yep, you read that right — not just Remake (Intergrade), but potentially Rebirth and even the yet-to-be-named third game in the saga.

The tease came during a recent Creator's Voice video published by Nintendo. Hamaguchi didn’t hold back, saying, “I hope players are looking forward to Final Fantasy VII remake series on Nintendo Switch 2.” Notice he said “series,” not just “game.”

Let’s rewind a bit. Square Enix had already confirmed that Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade — the souped-up version of the original remake — is coming to the Switch 2. Originally launched on PS5 in mid-2021 (and PC not long after), Intergrade packed enhanced visuals, smoother performance, and the Yuffie-centric DLC, Episode INTERmission.

When Hamaguchi first announced the port back in April, he encouraged fans to “look forward to more updates on the FF7 Remake project for Switch 2.” That line was vague, but now with his latest comment, it’s starting to look like the full trilogy may be in the pipeline for Nintendo’s next-gen handheld-hybrid.

Hamaguchi also shared his take on the Switch 2's performance, saying he felt it was powerful enough to handle the full scope of the Final Fantasy VII Remake series — a pretty bold statement, considering how visually intense Rebirth is on PS5.

Adding more fuel to the hype fire, reports from the recent Nintendo Switch 2 Direct revealed a stellar lineup of third-party support. Elden Ring and FromSoftware’s brand-new exclusive, The Duskbloods, are both confirmed for the Switch 2. Clearly, Nintendo isn’t playing around this generation — they’re going after the hardcore gaming crowd in a big way.

Historically, Final Fantasy VII Remake was a PlayStation exclusive — at least initially — before making its way to PC. If Square Enix delivers the entire trilogy on Switch 2, it’ll be the first time the full Remake saga is playable on a non-Sony platform, which is kind of a big deal for longtime fans who grew up with Nintendo but had to jump ship to PlayStation for Cloud’s story.

Of course, Square Enix hasn’t officially said Rebirth is coming to Switch 2 just yet, but Hamaguchi’s choice of words and consistent references to the series are giving fans plenty of reason to be optimistic.
