Fortnite Adds Roblox-Style Monetization: Creators Can Charge Players Directly

Fortnite creators can now charge players for items and access inside their maps, marking a major step toward Roblox‑style monetization.

For years, Fortnite’s in‑game currency, V‑Bucks, was limited to official purchases like skins, bundles, and Battle Passes controlled entirely by Epic Games. That’s changing with the rollout of a new system called In‑Island Transactions, which allows creators to sell their own items, assets, or even gated areas directly within their maps.

Right now, the feature is still in testing, so maps using it aren’t public yet. But once it goes live, creators will split earnings evenly with Epic, 50 percent each.

Prices will range from 50 to 5,000 V‑Bucks in increments of 50. Creators can sell bundles, single products, or even random‑reward items, though Epic requires full disclosure of odds. For example, if a potion pack offers a 60% chance of five potions, 30% chance of ten, and 10% chance of fifty, those odds must be shown before purchase.

Paid random items are restricted in several regions, including Singapore, Qatar, Australia, the Netherlands, and Belgium. In the UK, they’re blocked for players under 18, and Brazil will adopt similar rules starting March 2026.

Transactions inside Creative and UEFN maps are final, though creators can issue refunds within 20 days. Only non‑IP Partner Licensing Program maps are eligible, which means official branded collaborations won’t be part of this system.

If you’ve followed Roblox, this all sounds familiar. Roblox has long allowed creators to sell items, passes, and private server access for Robux, taking between 30 and 70 percent of earnings. Fortnite’s approach mirrors that model but offers creators a larger share of profits and more flexibility. According to Epic, this is part of their push to make Fortnite a true creator marketplace.
